Becoming a Mason

The seeker’s path

The Order of Freemasons, and thus Národ Lodge, is a discreet association of gentlemen who seek in the lodge the conditions and support for their — above all spiritual — work on improving themselves. The lodge is not a closed society and each year initiates several candidates.

What to seek in the lodge

Work, brotherhood, service

The experience of being a Mason cannot be handed on. Still, we can at least hint at it.

Work on oneself

Masons are builders. They build the temple of their own inner self — through patient work, discipline and the guidance of more experienced brethren. It is demanding work that changes a person; we pursue it for a lifetime.

Brotherhood

A fellowship founded on mutual trust, tolerance and, when needed, support. In the lodge sit side by side people of different faiths, professions and political views; what unites them is respect for difference.

Service

A Freemason begins with himself but aims towards others. The ideal is to act so that those around him can say “he is a good man” without ever suspecting he is a Mason.

Basic criteria

  • of good morals and reputation, with a clean record
  • free in thought and economically — controlled by no one and nothing
  • tolerant, acknowledging a higher moral authority above himself (a believer)
I Reading and reflection Begin with the recommended reading — and clarify for yourself why you wish to become a Mason.
II A non-binding message Write to the lodge through the contact form about yourself and your interest.
III Getting to know each other Admitting new members is no formality — mutual acquaintance may take years. Admission always requires a guarantor from among the lodge’s masters.
IV The brethren decide Admission is decided by the members of the lodge in a secret ballot, according to ancient rules.

There is no legal or moral entitlement to become a member of the lodge.

Frequently asked questions

Is it a secret society?

No. The Order is a duly registered association with its own identification number that meets all its legal obligations. It is not secret but discreet — we do not publish membership lists and we respect each person’s right to decide whether to reveal his membership.

Must I profess a particular religion?

Freemasonry is not a religion and has no dogmas. People of various faiths are admitted, as are those with a general philosophical belief. The condition is reverence for a higher moral authority, which Masons call the Great Architect of the Universe — and which each interprets according to his own conviction.

How much time does it take and what does it cost?

Membership assumes regular attendance — one who does not attend the lodge should not join it. Membership dues differ between lodges, usually amounting to a few thousand crowns a year.
